Built during the 11th and 12th centuries by the canons count to the glory of God and St Julien its martyr, it succeeds the churches erected previously from the 4th century and shelters the saint's tomb.
During the13th and 14th century the nave was covered with a gothic style vault. St Julien of Brioude is a pilgrimage church classified in 1957 to the rank of “Minor Basilica”. St Julien's popularity accounts for the large dimensions of the church (the largest in Auvergne).
