This building, during medieval times was one of the main elements of the fortified construction that protected the buildings which enabled the existence of the clerks' chapter: the basilica, and dignitaries' homes (abbot, dean, provost). Its ground floor now houses Brioude Tourist Office.

Home to the main character of the town, the chapter's dean, it outlived the medieval times, witnessing the ongoing bloody battles amongst upper feudal families and the Church and State power.

The magnificient painted ceiling of the large room on the 1st floor, dating back to the 13 th century, is a remarkable feature of this residence.

This ceiling is the most beautiful and most comprehensive of heraldic decors of the 12 th century: over 400 blazons of a 156 different types of the most diversified patterns (geometric, vegetal, animal and imaginary bestiary).

The premises will, shortly, host permanent theme linked exhibitions : the history of Brioude, the history of "l'Hôtel du Doyenné" and of its emblazoned ceiling.

Due to renovation work the premises are currently closed to the public.
