Religious sanctuaries

During the 11 th century, the Brivadois "covers itself with a coat of white churches" (Raoul Glaber).

Each village has a simple church, of modest ambition, charming and colourful, sheltering sumptuous treasures (furniture, capitals, sculptures, mural paintings).

Saint-Julien de Brioude and Lavaudieu Abbey provide a remarkable array of Brivadois treasures of roman art.

A must: the classified roman churches of Auzon, Beaumont (Roman Christ), Bournoncle St Pierre, Lavaudieu, St Beauzire.

La Chaise-Dieu

The remarkable collection of mural paintings of the Haut-Allier, in the vicinity of Brioude, is well worth mentioning and rises to the standard of the main French centres, (amongst others, St Savin, Berzé-la Ville, Tavant) as well as to the European centres.

All along the Allier Valley , numerous sites shelter paintings of a great diversity of styles and period: Brioude, Lavaudieu, Auzon, Blassac' St Cirgues, Peyrusse, Pébrac, etc.
