The currently expanding borough (1100 inhabitants), owes its existence to the succeeding bridges crossing the Allier and which have, many a time, been washed away by its floods.

From the height of its rocky mount, Vieille Brioude, gateway to the Allier Gorges, looks over the Allier and Limagne valleys.

This borough has been Brivadois' main wine centre since the beginning of the medieval times.
The wine tradition can be seen in the wine growers' houses, the cellars, the heavy wine press and the terraced gardens (pailhas).
The "Musée jardin de la ville", traces back the wine growers' history and know-how.
From mid June to mid September, the public can view the "Trésor" which is on display in the church of Saint-Vincent de Vieille-Brioude.

Free entrance.

Vieille-Brioude - Bernard PLANTIN

You will find many itineraries in the "Brioude" and the "Au Fil de l'Allier" topoguide, starting from the borough and leading you along the Allier banks and the mountain foothills.

A pedestrian circuit follows the run of an aqueduct and leads you to the remarkable art piece of Vayron aqueduct bridge (1870) supplying Brioude with its water which is diverted upstream of Lavaudieu.
